Venetian Memories: J.Tyree

This postcard just made me laugh.

1. I thought Jessica went to Vegas without me, and I was sad.
2. Then the joke reference to my writing credit in the Wayne Brady Show...
3. And then... a stamp got stuck to it in my bag, hence the random 29 cents adhered in the middle of the message.

Jessica. We are going soon! I will email you details! Thanks for all the love in my mailbox both old (your card to White Oak Lane was presh), and then to NEW! Come visit soon!

"I lied. It did taste bad."
So many laughs we've shared in this wonderful city! I can't wait until we can go again!
You make any trip so much more fun!
Hope you're enjoying your new city!

winston-salem: address change

Family-

I end this beloved summer with a move to North Carolina! Eight years ago I moved to Virginia without much of a plan, just confidence that the Lord had something special in store for me. He did & it was amazing! My heart is filled with gratitude for the memories, moments, laughter & love I experienced that drew me closer to Christ, and helped create a family with so many special friends. I begin this adventure in NC excited for a new job opportunity & to discover the ins and outs of my new city. As always the door is always open, guest room is ready, and Gracie can't wait to show you around. Love.Love. -Kari & Gracie

Downtown Freetown: Seth

First postcard sent to the new house by a really fun person who is in AFRICA! It was ridiculously fun to see the piece of mail tucked into the mailbox, and then walk upstairs to have dinner with Matty before he left back for home in Virginia. It was very warm and fuzzy.

Seth is the best. During the packing and moving he was consistently making me laugh and smile through the days when the task seemed endless- and was even interested in a live blog feed of moving day (I compromised with some random Facebook comments). He can write a seriously witty email- which has often made me laugh out loud at the computer. I am continually thankful for his friendship and his commitment to being intentionally in touch despite the long distance from here to there.

Please check it his blog if you haven't already its a great read- and the most recent post about Tamba might have you considering a move to Africa yourself. Seth's Great Blog.

Things of note:

1. I had a conversation with Matty yesterday about the ugly postcard stamps.
2. RPPC's are an acronym Seth created for Real Photo Post Cards. Sometimes I like to get crafty. Once the "office" is unpacked in the new place, I'll get back to crafting. ;o)
3. I love mail. That comes from Africa, and arrives in North Carolina--- which is still a little strange that I LIVE here now... but am happily adjusting, and mail def. makes it feel more like home!
Thanks Seth, you are the best!

virginia: one of two

8 years.
That's much longer than I ever considered the summer of 2003 when I first arrived on Summer Staff @ Rockbridge. I fell in love instantly with the mountains. In recent years I have come and gone quite a bit but driving back or landing always felt like home. I met Theresa, Holmes, Mandy, Matt, Julie and Tex here (and Jessica too). Actually- there are so many more to be thankful for but they have been part of my family in intimate and powerful ways. The Lord blessed me with tears to help me grow- and strength to keep moving me forward. He's given me hope when I've not known the path- and Hie's given me grace when I'm fumbled. If North Carolina produces even half as much fruit- I will consider myself blessed, and spoiled. I wouldn't change a thing about this adventure and experience. I am thankful for more then I ever dreamed would arrive and am sure its time to say goodbye. Though I will miss my family being so close- my heart aches too because I am leaving Matty. And he has been the best and most loyal friend I ever could have scored... so to my list on postcard 2...

Sisters: Krystal

This postcard took over a decade to arrive. Probably something close to 15 years. My sister Krystal and I have not been close since childhood. One could blame several different factors, though the largest of which rests most in disadvantages that came in no longer living together after our parents divorced. We each went with a different parent. I was fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to finish my High School experience in Ridgefield, because our dad chose to live in town until I finished (I was half way through when the split happened).

Krystal went to live with our mother, and after that things were never the same. In recent years however our paths have continued to cross more frequently- she and Jon came to Virginia to visit dad, then we were all reunited in Vegas for Bill and Meghan's 10 Anniversary Wedding Renewal, and then much more last year as I helped her plan her wedding. One of the best gifts that came last year, in the midst of difficult emotional terrain, was the relationship Krystal and I forged through it all. We laughed, and told stories. We filled in the blanks in questions and conversations. When in Connecticut last May, we got Dunkin Donuts coffee everyday and had our own routine when running errands coordinating her wedding. The time together was sweet and cherished.

In August last year we took probably my favorite trip... ever. The sisters went to Vegas (which of course included all my sisters: Courtney, Mandy, Jessica, and Kristyn.) Spending time with all the girls helped build joy into what was an already a profound summer. After sending everyone back to the East Coast, Krystal and I got a car and started driving West. We drove towards Bakersfield, and then up to San Francisco- and drove along the coast south to Santa Monica, then back over to Vegas. I wish sometimes we had taken video of the conversations we had, or the drama of trying to find Krystal a soft serve vanilla ice cream cone.

Krystal and Bruce came to stay in Virginia for the summer. When they arrived- it was like Gracie had met her soul mate in Bruce. I seriously have never seen puppy love quiet like the two of them had. They played and snuggled every day. It was hysterical. I honestly do not know what this summer would have looked like without Krystal and Bruce. We never fought, not even once. She never judged my lack of organization or inability to decide what was for dinner. We laughed each and every day, and when it was necessary we cried. She heard me yell at someone for the first time ever (like, I seriously yelled) and then made me laugh, "You are intimidating when you yell". She bonded with Kristyn, and cared for me and Gracie incredibly well. When she left, I cried. I had no idea I was going to be so emotional, and so incredibly proud of the journey. I literally felt like my best friend was leaving me forever, it was profound and intimate.

Below is a little list of her top Virginia memories. 15 years ago I had no idea what a choice to stay in Ridgefield with Dad would mean to my relationship with Krystal. There are moments when looking back you wonder what would have been different, or what you could have done better. However, the Lord knew the entire time the path, the journey, and what was coming. It makes me hopeful that time and circumstances do change, we do grow, cycles do end. Especially between the bonds of sisters.

(I think on this list I would add:
1. you loving how everything is a numbered list and would laugh at me- but look you made a numbered list! wahoo!)
2. waffle house profound conversations always
3. "would you be offended if I cleaned?"
4. you doing my laundry. seriously- that was awesome)

Lexington Summer 2011
1. Strawberries or Cherries?
2. Joyful Spirit
3. Baseball
4. Watching Gracie and Bruce fall in love.
5. Getting to know Kristyn
6. Being sisters again!
Being in VA was great for so many reasons, I never thought how hard it would be to leave. Thank you for everything, Love You, Miss You, Krystal

7 things: 8.6.11

1. I have never been able to wear Bill's watch. I had even thought about selling it to buy my own. One that didn't have any gold it in. Last week I found it while pcking and put it on. A perfect fit. I have worn it almost everyday since- and have not minded for a moment the gold parts of it. I love that I know what it is, what it means, but that to anyone else its just a fancy watch. I love it.
2. K and I went to Coinstar to cash in my jar of $$. In selecting the gift card- we debated the value of the jar. I decided iTunes was a solid choice. Umm... the jar totaled $150- crazy! That's a lot of iTunes. It will surely come in handy with my soon to be iPad.
3. I had a great talk with Jules this week. It had been ages since we had talked- and I am so thankful for the honesty. Laughter. And vulnerability. Heart her.
4. Date night with Kristyn. Pretty dresses & dinner.
5. Quadruple date night. I love those girls + husbands. Thankful for Matty and a day bopping around. Winnie the Pooh. Build a Bear. Conversation at dinner w/ crowd.
6. A Lexington Day. Shopped. Had lunch. Chatted with business owners I have known for years. Having cupcakes with Kristyn and just hanging out.
7. Talk with Emily about silly things. I wish North Carolina was Indiana- if only to live by her.

7 Links Challenge

Seth recently was nominated for the Seven Link Challenge on Blogger, and then consequently tagged me as one of the blogs to mention. I have thought about this list for a little while, and am finally sitting down to write it (thanks for helping me procrastinate the packing)

The rules are:
1) Blogger is nominated to take part
2) Blogger publishes his/her 7 links on his/her blog – 1 link for each category.
3) Blogger nominates up to 5 more bloggers to take part.
4) These bloggers publish their 7 links and nominate another 5 more bloggers
5) And so it goes on!
6) We’ll be sharing the best posts from participating bloggers on our blog and everyday on Facebook and Twitter at #My7Links

So here it goes:
  • My most beautiful post: More Alive: I struggled with this choosing for this category a lot. But... it was about Lent, Easter, and Spring. All of which are beautiful things. So this wins!
  • My most popular post: Hello.Well Yes Hello: Abernathy: Abernathy is an artist and a truly inspiring one at that. She wrote in, and I was completely surprised. A handcrafted masterpiece! This post has been hit on the most (next to the initial one, which I don't count). I love it.
  • My most controversial post: Finished: I don't have any. But I will mention this one because it was my favorite things about work when I left, and I may have left off a few things by accident. There were some opinions. For sure.
  • My most helpful post: From a small idea...: This blog post started out the vision for postcard pen pal. Some people caught on late in the train, and I'd send them back to the beginning. This blog truly started from one very small idea, to be pen pals with someone utilizing only postcards. Then in the brainstorming, I started talking about my favorite thing to do when traveling was sending postcards back home to myself. "What if I did that still, documenting my life at home?" People sometimes get confused that they are actually sent in the mail, but yes... each postcard is mailed. Stamped. Marked in time. This project has gotten to touch more people then ever intended, and I'm excited at the close of the year looking back and compiling one complete, finished book.
  • A post whose success surprised me: Sweet 15: Starbucks: I posted this postcard I received from Starbucks as one of my free drinks associated with their gold card. This post has gotten more hits then I ever thought- I wonder who Googles Starbucks 15 and this pops up? I don't know. But every week, it shows back up again on the list and I have to chuckle.
  • A post I feel didn't get the attention it deserved: I am thankful that every post has gotten attention! But if I were to pick one that I think was just a winner that didn't overwhelm the stats charts? I want a thousand of these postcards that Mandy sent while she was on assignment. I loved it. Correspondence Card: Mandy.
  • The post I am most proud of: Carousel: the purpose of this blog was that I wanted to document real, true, honest life. I wrote this postcard from an exhausted and worn out place, but it was still hopeful. And I love it because I will look back on this year remembering all things, all fought things, and praising God that He was in it all.

My Blogs I'd Like to Mention (minus Seth's of course). I don't read a ton of blogs, but I don't miss a single one of the two below. Even if Julie, you are infrequent! *uh hum, write more!

1. My friend Julie doesn't write as regularly as she used to, but I love it still. Whenever she updates the blog and I read it, I can hear her voice talking about her subject matter and I just smile. Joyful Journies.

2. I have been following Spooner's Blog FOR-EVER! I often steal things she's written off of it for my own use, she's just an incredibly gifted writer. She is both funny and serious, but regardless of the subject matter, she's always a great read. Present Company Excluded.

six: the fisherman

six.

i imagine one day getting to Heaven, and meeting the eyes I have been searching for my whole life, and I imagine the conversation beginning something like this:
"Before you knew me, I was a fairy princess.
Before you knew me, I traveled the world.
I believe in Fairy Tales and Dreamers Dreams... so many of mine have come true.
Before you met me I saw fireflies and I thought of you."

A dark night sky illuminated always leads me back to you.
Can't wait to fill you in on the rest.

something beautiful: venezia

I have heard the Jars of Clay song a hundred times over the years- but today "Something Beautiful" came on the shuffle and it struck me differently- its funny how we can know all the words to a song and not even know what we are saying.
Thoughts of beauty always lead me back to Venice- and those glorious days blending in with the locals and speaking to strangers. There was a fluidity to the days and conversations that opened my eyes to what I hoped to see- and that was authentic and aware- and it was and still is- beautiful.

the presidio: andrew piper

Every contributor to this blog has received their own little bio/introduction upon their first appearance. I have been surprised in the past by those who have sent postcards in, so its been fun to write about people I've known and have loved so much- spanning middle school and then to past summer staffers from Rockbridge. I have to admit that I was going to post this without an introduction, because I know that if you have known me in the past four years, you have known who Tex is. Where do you start with a friendship filled with pinkie swear promises kept, photographs captured, letters/postcards sent, iChat conversations shared, and journeys away and back? However, everyone gets one. This is the short and sweet of a very long story:

For nostalgia I will say it began at Seth and Julie's Wedding in 2006, while seated next to each other at the reception we talked for hours. That conversation led to the summer of 2007 when Tex was an intern, I, the retail manager at Rockbridge. My office was right outside of the Intern Housing, and he would frequent it on his way up to the kitchen. That is where our friendship truly started. As many of you know, that same summer I left my job with Young Life to pursue the world, photography, Jesus, myself, the truth, the healing, and the adventure. I had no idea how the friendship cultivated in my office at camp, would shape the way I viewed all of those things and more. Tex was the most reliable ride to/from the airport (regardless of the hour), the best person to call in an emotional panic from an Island in Thailand (or in Paris with a lost passport!), or someone to sit with over iChat to talk through lessons learned, sights seen, and things felt. More then an airport shuttle, our friendship was my home base in every last zip code, time zone, and continent I happened reside (and most essentially a grounding force when I returned to Lexington to live after the initial big adventure). So it goes without saying, that because he made sure to be in touch and intentional in our friendship, I never forgot where home was, and he has in turn "traveled" the world.

Last week he went to San Francisco. I love.love.love. that city. I have talked about it for years, and I have told him forever it needed to be one of our adventures. Thankfully, he seized the opportunity to go. I sent a list of things to make sure he saw and tasted everything I loved. (There is a Walt Disney Family Museum that was closed when I was there last summer, which is why his message begins with "Disney!") When talking to him last week, he sounded exactly as I had imagined/hoped he would. He had found the same ease, the same quiet, the same stillness. To be present with people- but mostly just to be before himself and the Lord. I was explaining how to get to this one park that I absolutely love, and I had to laugh when he said that he had found it the day prior, and had already spent some quality time there.

Through all the stops and starts, the mountain tops and valleys; I am thankful that in him I have had someone who has always encouraged me to jump and leap- to be bold and vulnerable in the pursuit of growth, change, healing, and of course most of all Jesus- regardless of how far from home that may send me. I can honestly and humbly say, that I would not be the same without his perspective, wisdom, and his patience when asking a question and waiting for the real, honest, and fought for answer.

T. Oh, the places we've been. You always sent me out into the world hoping/believing/trusting that I'd come home closer to something real, and I thank you for that. Thanks for a postcard from one of my favorite places on earth (next to Disney World and Greece, of course). You were thought of and prayed for so often, and yes, I knew you'd love it. There is not a place I've gone that you've not journeyed through with me or have not received a post card from, and I'm sure that in many ways, that will be true for a lifetime. (do I get a gold star for writing the shortest version of a very long beloved story? The long version will be in the book one day. haha!)

Disney!
I haven't made it here yet but hopefully tom.
I love it here which I'm sure you can totally believe.
This should have been one of our adventures!
See you + Stories Everywhere
